BUSH BEANS A CRISPY SUMMER VEGETABLE

July 5, 2026

Growing Bush beans from seeds is very easy. They are annuals tasty crispy vegetables.

You can eat them raw right out of the garden as a crisp snack, or chop them up to add a to fresh salads. They are steamed, boiled, sautéed, or roasted. They make a classic side dish when tossed with a little butter, garlic, or lemon. They are used in green bean casseroles, hearty vegetable soups, and stews. They can be canned or freeze for the winter. They can also be pickled green beans (often called “dilly beans”)

Bush beans can be planted directly into warm soil after the last frost of spring. Place the seeds about 1 inch deep and space them 2 to 4 inches apart in rows that are 18 to 24 inches apart.

Choose a spot that gets full sunlight and has well-drained soil. Bush beans need full sun to thrive, 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. If they do not get enough sun, the plant will produce fewer flowers and fewer bean pods.

Water the soil gently so it stays damp but not soggy until the seedlings pop up about a week later.  Bush beans need about 1 inch of water per week. Bush beans grow as compact, sturdy little bushes, they do not need any poles or trellises to support them.

If growing bush beans in containers it will need a container with good drainage 8 to 10 inches wide and about 8 inches deep. The size to make a standard 2-gallon pot.  Plant more than one seed in a larger container, make sure to space the plants about 4 to 6 inches apart.

Bush bean seeds usually take about 6 to 10 days to germinate.  They will sprout fastest if the soil is warm, ideally between 70°F and 80°F. If the soil is too cold, they will take a little longer to sprout.  After the seed germinates beneath the soil, you will see the green bean plant break through the surface in about 7 to 14 days from the day you planted the seed.

Once the plant emerges, it grows very quickly. You can expect to start picking fresh bush beans to eat in about 50 to 60 days.  The individual bean pods usually grow to be about 4 to 6 inches long.  The more often you pick the bean pods, the more the plant will produce.  It is best to harvest them in the morning when their moisture levels are highest for the crispest texture. The pods are thick, firm, and smooth. Enjoy them.

The entire bush bean plant itself stays quite small and compact. It will typically reach about 12 to 24 inches in both height and width.  Making it a good choice for small spaces. A bush bean plant will lives and produces for about 2 to 3 months from the day you first plant the seed.

keep a close eye for common garden pests such as Mexican bean beetles, aphids, spider mites. Spraying a mild mixture of soapy water is an easy and effective way to clear away these pests and protect the harvest.
