GROWING TOMATOES FROM SEEDS IN CONTAINERS

Growing tomatoes from seeds in containers is very easy and fun. Start by choosing a well draining container 12 inches deep and wide. Fill it with a nutritious high-quality potting mix with PH 6. Add the seeds 1-inch-deep cover them with a layer of compost.  Add water.  Keep them moist all the time.  Containers plants need more water.  They tend to dry faster.  Place the Tomatoes in a sunny area.  They need 8 hours of daily sunlight.  It will take 2 weeks for the seeds to germinate.

The plant will continue to grow well after germination.  Keep watering all the time.    The leaves are bright green color with jagged edges.  They feel slightly fuzzy because they have tiny hairs and produce a sticky aromatic yellow oil. That is natural characteristic of the plant. Tomatoes produce a small star shaped yellow flower.  They self-pollinate.  The plant will grow to 3 to 4 feet tall.    It will take up  to 100 days for the plant to fully grow and to give fruit.  watch it grow and enjoy it.

HARVESTING TOMATOES

The flavor of the tomatoes depend on the kind you planted.  The plant will continue to grow flowers and produce fruit all season long until they are killed by frost or disease. The plant will produce more fruits if there are enough nutrients, water, and warmth.

When harvesting tomatoes it depends on the color and size of the tomato.

A ripe tomato should feel firm but soft under gentle pressure from your thumb.

PESTS TO WATCH FOR

When growing tomatoes watch out for aphids; they are a tiny, pear-shape insects. They suck the sap of the plant turning the leaves yellow. Hornworms are bright green caterpillars; they eat the leaves.
