SPINACH

Spinach is a versatile annual vegetable that thrives in cool weather. Delicious raw or cooked, it adds fresh flavor to salads and sautéed dishes alike. Packed with essential minerals like iron and folate, as well as vitamins A, C, and K, spinach is a nutrient-dense choice with very few calories—making it a favorite in garden beds and kitchens everywhere.

Growing spinach (Spinacia oleracea) from seed is fast and rewarding. Because spinach develops a delicate taproot and dislikes being transplanted, direct-sowing seeds straight into your garden beds or containers yields the best results.

GROWING SPINACH FROM SEED IN CONTAINERS

  1. Choose a Container: Select a well-draining pot that is at least 8 inches deep and wide.
  2. Sow the Seeds: Plant seeds ½ inch deep and spaced 2 inches apart. Cover them with a light layer of compost and water well.
  3. Sunlight & Care: Place your container in a location that receives 4 to 6 hours of daily sunlight. Keep the soil consistently moist.
  4. Growth Timeline: Seeds will germinate in about 2 weeks. The plants will grow up to 12 inches tall and reach full maturity in roughly 2 months.

(Note: Follow the same seed spacing and depth guidelines if you are direct-sowing directly into ground beds!)

HARVESTING SPINACH

As spinach matures, it produces large, broad, dark green leaves with a characteristic crinkled texture and tender stems.

Best Time to Harvest: Pick your leaves in the morning when they are sweetest and crispest. Be sure to harvest before the plant begins to bolt (flower).Spinach is an annual vegetable that grows well in cold places. Baby Spinach: Small, tender leaves can be harvested in as little as 3 weeks.

Mature Leaves: Full-sized leaves are ready in about 8 weeks.
