HOW TO GROW YAMS?

Yams are perennials herbaceous vines that grow in tropical areas. Yams are starchy tubers. Yams are light brown . The meat of the vegetable is orange and pink or yellow when cooked. They are originals to Africa. Now, they are grown all over the world specially in the Caribbean, Asia, and Oceania.

Yams are very easy to grow. If you want to grow yams or sweet potatoes. Place a yam in a container full of water. After 3 weeks the yam in the water will sprout. The sweet potatoes will have slips. Once the slips get bigger. You can pull the slips from the sweet potatoes. Take the slips and place in a water container and the slips will start growing roots and more leaves. After a few weeks the slips will have roots and leaves. The slips are ready to be planted in the ground or deep containers.

Make sure the fertilized soil is warm and have compost. Once you plant the roots slips. You need a deep soil spot to grow the sweet potato. it will take about 100 days to be ready to cultivate them. The plant grows very leafy. The roots are underneath the ground. That is the yams. Yams are free from pest and diseases.

If you are growing yams in containers make sure the container is 10 gallon deep and 12 inches wide. Place the slip and cover them with plenty of soil compost at least 3 inches of top covered with soil. You can add some mulch on top of the plant to keep the plant moist and protect it from getting weeds. Keep the plant moist all the time. If the plant gets dry the yam will be smaller. You will need to feed periodically every month with a layer o compost to get healthy big yams.

After 6 to 8 months the yams are ready to be harvest. Dig the soil. Pull the yams out of the ground. Dig the yams gently. You can get up to 5 pounds from a single slip. Yam can be store for a few months. Keep them dry and in a cool place. Wet them only when you are ready to cook them. Enjoy them
