Growing Herbs indoors in winter time.
As a metropolitan gardener you live in a city. You live in an apartment or in a condo. You have limited outdoor space or no space at all. Still you can grow your herbs indoor in your home in the winter time and have them all year around.
Find the space in the kitchen or in any sunny room or in a space closed to the window to have as much as possible access to the sun. Once you find the right space you can begin growing your herbs all year around. The herbs will sit on a space that receive 6 hours of sun daily. Some herbs like mint, parsley, and thyme require less sun light.
They will grow well near the window. When your herbs are not getting enough light they will let you know. Look for their signs. Stems will grow very long. The leaves will be very small and will turn yellow. If you can you can use a small grow light to mimic the sun light. They will do well.
Your herbs need to be moist all the time. The roots will rot if they sit on water for a long time. All containers need to have a hole to drain the water. Use a saucer to catch the water and protect the surface. The pots must have drainage holes. Herbs can grow indoor all year around even in winter time. Most herbs prefer 65 to 70 degrees. The same as the temperature for humans.
Some herbs will thrive in a shady area. There are multiple variety of herbs that will make easier to grow. Growing During the winter the temperature drops but herbs do well. You make sure the leaves are not touching the glass in the window. Basil is an annual and likes warm temperatures. It doesn’t come back.
Feed the herb plants plenty of fertilizer once a month. You need to feed them regularly. That will encourage the plant to grow and you will get lots of clippings. You can get the seeds and plant them indoors.
Herbs can be perennials they grow back every year. Oregano, thyme, mint, rosemary, chives are perennials hardy herbs. Annual grow every year. They do not come back. You have to plant them again. Basil is annual. Herbs are very nurturing and healing for the body. They can be use for cooking, perfume, and medicinal purpose.
If you are planting from seed. Get some organic soil and plant the seeds. keep the herb plants moist all the time. Push your finger down and if it feel dry water them. It will grow slowly and the roots will get strong.
Mint and lemon balm are hardy herbs. They are perennials plants. Plant them in containers. They take over the garden when planted outside. They need to be contained. They grow well indoor. They have medicinal properties. They prevent pests from getting in the plants. Sage, lavender and rosemary like to have space to grow well. They are perennials. They come back every year.
Herbs are very easy to grow indoor even in the winter. Try them. Water them. Use them. Watch them grow. You will enjoy.
