HOW TO GROW CHIVES FROM SEEDS

Chives are perennials herbaceous bulbous grass -like herbs that grow well in many areas. They thrive in many soils. They smell like onions. They are low maintenance plants. They are used in salads and in many dishes. It is also used for health purposes.

Growing chives is a very easy process. You can start directly outdoors or keep them in containers. They do well in both spaces. Pick the seeds with strong stems and green leaves. You can find them in a nursery store.

HOW TO PLANT CHIVES

When planting in containers choose a container middle size: 6 inches wide 8 inches deep. Fill the container 3/4 of the planter with good quality potting soil. Add the seeds 2 inches apart and 1/4 inch deep. Add a layer of compost. Water the container keep the soil moist. Place the new planter in a sunny place close to a window. It will take 15 day to germinate. When the pant has grown 4 inches you can replant it in a bigger container.

When planting chives directly on the ground choose a spot that gets at lest 6 hours of direct daily sun.

HOW TO HARVEST CHIVES

Chives will grow au tp 15 inches tall. they can be harvested once the leaves are a foot tall. Cut the leaves back to an inch long. The leaves will continue to grow and you will have chives the entire season. Chives can grow bushy. You can thin them out by cutting part of the plant and leaving the rest of the plant to grow better.

The soil has to be well drained with a PH of 6.0. They grow in zones 3-9 We are in zone 7b. In winter time chives will die and regrow in the spring. Adding mulch will protect the plants. in the winter.

HOW TO PROPAGATE CHIVES

Chives can be divided after 3 or 4 years. That will help the plant to rejuvenate and create new plants. That is a way to propagate the plant and it is a very reliable method. It can be tone in early spring.
