HOW TO GROW CAULIFLOWERS FROM SEEDS
WHAT IS CAULIFLOWER?
Cauliflower is a vegetable that can eaten raw, cooked, roasted, grilled. It can substitute bread and meat. It can be prepared in a number of recipes like casseroles, stir-fries, soups. It can be planted in the early spring or fall. October is the perfect month to plant cauliflower. It is a cool plant, and the cold weather makes it taste sweeter.
HOW TO PLANT CAULIFLOWER ?
First, fill up small potting tray with fertile well drained potting with a 7-pH soil. Wet it. Make a hole 1/2 inch deep in each compartment. Place 1 seed in each compartment. Press the seeds down and cover them with a layer of compost. Wet them. Keep them moist all the time while they germinate. it will take up to 2 weeks to germinate.
Once the seedlings are big enough, they are ready to be transplanted. It will take 4 weeks to 6 weeks for the cauliflower seedling to grow and be ready to be separated and transplanted to a bigger pot.
TRANSPLANTING CAULIFLOWER
Once transplanting the seedling keep them wet all the time. When the seedling are 6 inches long, they are ready to be planted in their final spot. That can be in the ground or in raised boxes or large pots. Prepare the soil add a thick layer of compost. Plant the new cauliflower plants 4 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Make a hole and place the plant there gently. Cover each plant well with soil. Continue to keep the new plant wet. The new plant will grow well.
They will need to be in a sunny place 6 hours daily preferable in the morning. They enjoy the gentle shade of the afternoons. Keep watering and keep them moist. It will take 3 months for the plant to have cauliflower head to show.
WHEN TO HARVEST CAILIFLOWER
When the cauliflower head is firm and compact it can be harvested. When harvesting cauliflowers cut part of the stem. That will keep the cauliflower fresh longer.
