GROWING CABBAGE IN POTS ON YOUR BALCONY OR PATIO
How to Grow Cabbage from Seeds in Containers
Cabbage is a versatile vegetable used in all kinds of dishes: soups, salads, and sandwiches. It can be eaten raw, cooked, pickled, and fried. Growing cabbage in containers is very easy.
Get a container that is at least 12 inches deep and wide with good drainage holes. Fill your pot with a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Sow 2 cabbage seeds to the center of the pot 1/2 inch deep. Add a thick layer of compost. Add water keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy. The seeds will germinate in 2 weeks. Place the pot in a sunny area. Watch it grow. Enjoy it!
HOW TO CARE FOR CABBAGE
Cabbage thrives in cooler weather. Place your container in a spot that gets 6 hours of sunlight daily. Keep the temperature between 60 degrees F and 70 degrees F. Once the seedlings are about 3 inches tall, and have 2 true leaves, thin them out so only the strongest plant remains. It will take 14 days for the seedlings to be established. The plant will continue to grow. Keep watering it. Maintain it moist not waterlogged. It will take 120 days for cabbage to reach full growth.
To ensure a successful harvest of heavy, dense heads, feed your plant with a nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer every few weeks throughout the growing season.
Cabbage leaves are thick and fleshy. round oval shaped with a smooth or crinkled crispy texture. They come in a variety of colors: white, yellow, green, purple, red.
HARVESTING CABBAGE
Cabbage can be harvested when the head is firm, dense, and solid. It has a 10-inch diameter. Cut the head at the base. Leave some outer leaves on the plant.
PROTECT YOUR CABBAGE AGAINST PESTS
Aphids, cabbage looper, and imported Cabbage worms can attack cabbage. Check the leaves for tiny yellow eggs. Remove them by hand. Use a mesh to cover the plant to keep the butterflies from laying eggs.
