WHAT IS LEMONGRASS?

Lemongrass is an aromatic herb. It is used for tea. The health benefits of lemongrass are widely known. it relieves insomnia and helps with digestion. It reduces blood pressure, decreases depression and anxiety.

It is a soft perennial herb as long as it is taken care properly. It can stay outside all year. If it is in USA zones 8b and 9. In the rest of the zones, the stalks need to be taken in and protected during the winter. The stalks could be kept in water for the winter. The roots will grow well.

HOW TO GROW LEMONGRASS FROM STALKS?

You will need to get some lemongrass stalks from a local nursery store. You can also separate the lemongrass stalks from lemongrass plants you have in your garden. They propagate by division. Split them in the middle. They will continue to grow.

Lemongrass is a tropical plant. It loves heat and at least 8 hours full of sun. It grows to be 5 feet tall and has a life span of 4 years.

WHERE TO PLANT THE LEMONGRASS STALKS?

Take the lemongrass stalk and make a hole in the grass. Plant each stalk 2 inches deep and 2 inches apart. Keep the grass moist but not wet. If the roots stay wet, it will decay. You will need well drained, moist soil rich in compost. Plant the stalks in a very sunny place. They will do well.

Lemongrass is used in soups, salads, to flavor meats too. It is also used in cocktails.
